Welcome to the Voice of America’s News Words.
In a forest in southern Chile, a giant cypress tree has survived for five thousand years.
Adapt
The giant cypress tree is in the process of being recognized as the world’s oldest tree. Researchers who study and protect it say it provides clues on how to adapt to environmental changes.
In biology, adapt means to change in order to survive new conditions or pressures. In general, to adapt is to change something, like ideas or behavior in order to deal with a new situation.
