Welcome to English in a Minute!
When we imitate something, we copy it. But what does it mean when we say, art imitates life?
Art Imitates Life
Speaker A: How did you like the art exhibit we saw yesterday?
Speaker B: Dan, to be honest, I didn’t get it. It was just a guy sleeping in a small room in the middle of the museum.
Speaker A: Yeah, it was brilliant! In a word: Art imitates life.
Speaker B: Okay, that was three words, Dan. And I have my own three words: It was bad.
When we say, art imitates life, we mean that a work of art is inspired by real-life events. Or it mirrors real life in some way. We can say this about any kind of creative project.
And that’s English in a Minute!
