Welcome to English in a Minute!
Bells make this noise. And whistles make this noise. But does this expression have to do with noises?
Bells and Whistles
Speaker A: My friend’s new car is amazing! It has all the latest bells and whistles.
Speaker B: Really? What features does it have?
Speaker A: Well, it has a karaoke machine, self parking…
Speaker B: Wait! How many songs on the karaoke machine?
Speaker A: I don’t know, thousands?
Speaker B: Gasp!
“Bells and whistles” are special features added to a product to make it more appealing. But they are not essential or needed. Anything from cars to exercise equipment can have bells and whistles.
And that’s English in a Minute!
