Welcome to English in a Minute!
These are bubbles! They make people happy. But what happens if we burst them?
Burst Someone’s Bubble
Speaker A: Jonathan, I finally got a reservation at that new Turkish restaurant!
Speaker B: I hate to burst your bubble, Anna, but it’s not very good. And I love Turkish good.
Speaker A: Well, maybe you just ordered the wrong things.
Speaker B: Oh, I ordered everything they had to offer.
If you “burst someone’s bubble”, you tell them their expectations about something are not true. Bursting someone’s bubble can make them feel pretty disappointed. In this case, I think Anna will be okay.
And that’s English in a Minute!
