Welcome to English in a Minute from home!
Dough is a mixture of water and flour used to make baked goods. But how else do Americans use this word?
Speaker A: Aw, man! I just realized I don’t have enough money to buy another Sevendust face covering.
Speaker B: Sevendust is your favorite band. I can send you some dough. How much do you need?
Speaker A: That would be great! I only need $20.
Speaker B: $20 for a face mask?!
Speaker A: I have to buy their new album, too!
In this case, “dough” means money. Americans use other food-related words to talk about money, too, like ‘bread,’ ‘bacon,’ and even ‘cheese.’ I’m suddenly very hungry!
And that’s English in a Minute!
