Welcome to English in a Minute!
We all know how to draw a line on paper. But what does it mean to draw a line?
Draw the Line
Speaker A: I lost power last night. I’m going to lose all my frozen food.
Speaker B: Bring it to my house. I have room in my freezer.
Speaker A: Great. I have three frozen pizzas and some ice cream.
Speaker B: No problem.
Speaker A: Oh, wait! And a frozen turkey. It’s 10 kilograms.
Speaker B: 10 kilos? Dan, I draw the line at a 10-kilogram frozen bird.
To “draw the line” means to set a boundary. The line is a limit to what someone will do or accept.
Honestly, I would have drawn the line at pizza. My freezer is full!
And that’s English in a Minute!
