Welcome to the Voice of America’s News Words.
Ferdinand Marcos Jr. was recently sworn in as president of the Philippines.
Emulate
Marcos Jr.’s inauguration came 36 years after his father, Ferdinand Marcos Sr., was ousted as president for his human rights abuses and corruption. In his speech, Marcos Jr. called for unity, defended his father’s rule, and added that he would emulate him.
To emulate is to try to be like someone you respect or believe is successful at something. Sometimes people seek to do even better than those they emulate.
