Hi! Good day, everyone! My name is Honey. Today, I will show you a common street food you can eat here in the Philippines. It is called “balut”.
Balut, also spelled as balot, is a Filipino term for a fertilized developing egg embryo that is boiled and eaten from the shell. It is a fertilized bird egg, usually a duck, which is incubated for a period of 14 to 21 days, depending on the local culture and then steamed. Balut eaters prefer salt or a chili, garlic and vinegar mixture to season their eggs. The broth surrounding the embryo is sipped from the egg before the shell is peeled. You can buy balut in stores and malls. But usually, there are a lot of vendors who use their bicycles to sell balut. You’ll know it’s them because they shout “Balut! Balut!” while cycling. Balut is also a relatively cheap source of protein and calcium. All of the contents of the egg may be consumed. Although the white at the bottom may remain uneaten depending on the age of the fertilized egg.
