Welcome to English in a Minute.
Shot put is an Olympic sport. You throw a small but heavy metal ball as far as you can.
Long Shot
Speaker A: I bought a lottery ticket.
Speaker B: You know the chances of winning are very small.
Speaker A: Ah. I know.
Speaker B: Very, very small. What I mean is… You’re not going to win.
Speaker A: I know it’s a long shot. But the top prize is $35 million.
Speaker B: $35 million? Later!
Speaker A: Where are you going?
Speaker B: To buy all the tickets!
A “long shot” is something that has a little chance of succeeding.
You may not expect to succeed, but long shots can be worth trying.
People who follow horse racing use this expression a lot.
And that’s English in a Minute!
