Welcome to the Voice of America’s News Words.
In New York, law enforcement officials recently returned ancient stolen objects to Iraqi officials.
Plunder
The objects include a stone plate that once belonged to a king who ruled thousands of years ago in what is now called Iraq. Some objects were taken from conflict zones or plundered from archaeological sites.
Plunder can be both a verb and a noun. As a verb, to plunder is to take valuable things from a place by force. As a noun, plunder describes things that are stolen, especially during war.
