Welcome to English in a Minute!
Dice are used in lots of games. Are Anna and Jonathan talking about games or something else?
Roll the Dice
Speaker A: Anna, where are you going on vacation?
Speaker B: Oh, I’m not sure yet.
Speaker A: Don’t you leave next week?
Speaker B: Tomorrow, actually. My plan is to go to the train station and take whatever train comes first.
Speaker A: That’s not a plan. That’s just rolling the dice.
When you roll dice, you can’t control what side lands up.
The phrase to “roll the dice” means to take a chance or risk.
You may have a good result or a bad one. You know, I feel like Anna rolls the dice a lot in her life.
And that’s English in a Minute!
