Welcome to English in a Minute!
If you make a meal from scratch, you make it all yourself, with basic and fresh foods. But what does start from scratch mean?
Start from Scratch
Speaker A: My design for our new office is done!
Speaker B: Oh, did you hear? We don’t have the money for a new kitchen.
Speaker A: No problem, that is easy to fix.
Speaker B: Oh, and no new meeting rooms.
Speaker A: Okay, I’ll just move this wall over here.
Speaker B: Oh, and the library? Yeah, that’s not happening.
Speaker A: You know what? I’m starting from scratch.
To “start from scratch” means to start from the beginning. Sometimes this means you lose the work you have already done. But starting from scratch can be easier and smarter than trying to fix something.
And that’s English in a Minute!
