Speaker A: Jonathan, Bob is not coming to our team meeting.
Speaker B: What? It’s a team project! We have to work together as a team.
Speaker A: I know. And working alone strikes at the heart of a team project.
Speaker B: That Bob. Maybe our team just doesn’t need Bob.
Speaker A: Bob.

The heart is what keeps things going strong. When you “strike at the heart of something”, like an idea or project, you ruin it. You attack the central part of it.
