Welcome to the Voice of America’s News Words.
Geoffrey Hinton, a computer scientist who helped develop early artificial intelligence, left his job at Google with a message.
Supersede
Hinton spoke of the risk caused by computers that may soon supersede human intelligence. He said they will have learned from us by “reading” all the books and stories that ever were.
The verb supersede means to force out and replace with something better — maybe something stronger or smarter. Supersede comes from an old Latin word meaning “to sit on top of.”
