Surge
For months, border agents have faced a surge of migrants seeking asylum. Families and single adults who are caught crossing illegally are expelled, but unaccompanied children are held in crowded shelters.
A surge is a sudden, unusually big increase in the number, level or size of something. A storm surge, for example, is a rise in sea level from a powerful storm.
