Welcome to English in a Minute!
A yard is a unit of measurement that’s almost the same as a meter. But what does the whole nine yards mean?
The Whole Nine Yards
Speaker A: Dan, I’m going camping this weekend.
Speaker B: Me too! What features does your camp site have?
Speaker A: Features?
Speaker B: Yeah! My camp site has the whole nine yards: a hot tub, swimming pool, and a pizza oven.
Speaker A: Well, mine has some ground for a tent and dirt. So much dirt!
“The whole nine yards” is another way of saying “everything.” It can also mean doing everything you can to get something done.
And that’s English in a Minute!
