Welcome to the Voice of America’s News Words.
In Sudan, a battle between the army and a government-linked security force began on April 15.
Uproot
The Sudanese army said it recently suspended talks with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces to extend a ceasefire. The fighting has uprooted more than one million people across Sudan.
In this example uprooting means to force people to flee from their homes and communities.
Uprooting is usually destructive. In gardening, to uproot is to pull a whole plant from the ground, its home.
