Welcome to English in a Minute!
Walking backwards can be dangerous. So, is walking something back something you shouldn’t do?
Walk Something Back
Speaker A: Jonathan, Betsy mistakenly sent her entire office an email saying how much she hated her job.
Speaker B: Oh goodness. Did she get fired?
Speaker A: Yes, but not before trying to walk back her email.
Speaker B: It’s a lot harder to walk something back when it’s in writing.
When you “walk something back,” you try to put distance between yourself and something you did or said. You do this because what you did or said was wrong or is no longer a popular position to have.
