Welcome to English in a Minute!
A thick blanket helps keep you warm. But what does a wet blanket do? Let’s listen.
Wet Blanket
Speaker A: So, is everything ready for next week’s cookout?
Speaker B: No. Bob from accounting complained to management. He said we’re not allowed to cook outside.
Speaker A: Are you serious? Bob is such a wet blanket.
Speaker B: I know. Let’s call him No-Fun Bob.
Speaker A: (Sigh.)
A “wet blanket” is someone who says or does things that stop other people from enjoying themselves.
Long ago, cooks kept a wet blanket nearby to help put out any kitchen fires. These days, a wet blanket puts out other people’s joy.
And that’ English in a Minute!
